As part of the American Medical Student Association’s
Achieving Diversity in Dentistry and Medicine Leadership Training Program,
Jocelyn Elders, M.D., former Surgeon General of the United States, delivered
the keynote address.
Nationally renowned clinical researcher John
O. Burgess, D.D.S. M.S., Louisiana State University School of Dentistry,
gave a Restorative Dentistry Update Friday, July 15.
In honor of its 100-year anniversary, the Dental
Branch at Houston was recognized by the Texas Legislature with the passing
of two independent resolutions.

Ph.D., from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, presents
“Preparing Dental Providers for the 21st Century: Focus on Improving
Learning,” during the Centennial Speakers Series.
It was certainly a Centennial-style occasion! With distinction,
elation and celebration, The University of Texas Dental Branch
class of 2005 held its commencement services at the Verizon
Wireless Theatre, downtown, May 21. Sixty-five students in
the D.D.S. program participated in the ceremony, 16 students
received their dental hygiene certificates and 22 received
a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene.
Family, friends, faculty, alumni and administrators were
present. Special guest speakers included Jerry Long, D.D.S.,
president of the UT Dental Branch Alumni Association, James
T. Willerson, M.D., president of the UT Health Science Center
at Houston, H. Scott Caven, UT System Regent and Kenneth Shine,
M.D., UT System executive vice chancellor for Health Affairs,
who delivered the remarks of UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof,
J.D., who could not be present. Several distinguished alumni,
as well as two former deans of the Dental Branch were present
to celebrate.
The ceremony, conducted by Catherine M. Flaitz, D.D.S., dean
of the Dental Branch, was followed by a reception hosted by
the UT Dental Branch Alumni Association.
