As part of the American Medical Student Association’s
Achieving Diversity in Dentistry and Medicine Leadership Training Program,
Jocelyn Elders, M.D., former Surgeon General of the United States, delivered
the keynote address.
Nationally renowned clinical researcher John
O. Burgess, D.D.S. M.S., Louisiana State University School of Dentistry,
gave a Restorative Dentistry Update Friday, July 15.
In honor of its 100-year anniversary, the Dental
Branch at Houston was recognized by the Texas Legislature with the passing
of two independent resolutions.
Judith Buchanan, D.M.D.,
Ph.D., from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, presents
“Preparing Dental Providers for the 21st Century: Focus on Improving
Learning,” during the Centennial Speakers Series.

The following Dental
Branch faculty members were honored during the 2005 Commencement
ceremony as outstanding teachers in their respective areas.
The three awards were created to applaud instructors who have
an ability to motivate and inspire students to learn.
John H.
Freeman Award
Barry Rittman,
Ph.D., senior instructor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Rittman has worked
at the Dental Branch since December 1989 and since 2003 has
held a joint position with the University of Texas Medical
School at Houston. Prior to his arrival Rittman worked at
the University of Iowa Dental School and Medical School teaching
Histology, Oral Histology, Gross Anatomy and Research Methodology
to Dental and Medical students. Rittman received his training
at the London Hospital Dental School. Rittman is involved
in a variety of decision-making organizations within the university,
including the InterFaculty Council, which he chaired in 2004.
John P. McGovern Award
Gary Frey, D.D.S., clinical assistant professor of Restorative
Dentistry and Biomaterials.
Frey, a clinical assistant professor of Restorative Dentistry
and Biomaterials, is a 1979 graduate of the UT Dental Branch
and has served at the Dental Branch since 2000. Prior to his
arrival, Frey worked spent nearly 20 years in private industry
dentistry, including work in his own practice. Frey is a member
of numerous professional organizations and the recipient of
a variety of honors, including last year’s Freeman Award.
Lorna J. Bruning Award
School of Dental Hygiene
Amy Murphy, clinical assistant professor, School of Dental
Hygiene.
Murphy is a 1990 graduate of the School of Dental Hygiene
and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Science/Community
Health from Stephen F. Austin State University. Murphy serves
as a clinical assistant professor at the School of Dental
Hygiene. She also has extensive experience in private practice
and is licensed by the Texas Dental Hygiene State Board of
Examiners. Murphy serves on a variety of committees within
the health science center and is active in the community.
In Spring 2003 she won the Dean’s Teaching Excellence
Award.
