History of Endodontics

Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics

Where we were, where we are, and where we are going –
  • Endodontics was recognized as a Specialty of Dentistry in 1963.
  • The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston graduated its first student, Dr. E. Barden Patterson in 1967.
  • At that time, the program was under the direction of Dr. Martin Cattoni.
  • Program Directors have been:
    • Dr. Martin Cattoni
    • Dr. Frank Trice
    • Dr. Richard (Dick) Madden
    • Dr. Jeffrey Hoover
    • Dr. John Ludington
    • Dr. John Suchina
    • Dr. Gerald Glickman
  • Dr. Timothy Svec is the current Director of the Advanced Education Program in Endodontics
  • The Program was a 2-year program until 1994 when it became a three year program with greater emphasis on research by residents. All students, who successfully complete the Program, receive a Certificate in Endodontics and a Masters of Science Degree.
  • Several distinguished alumni have served as President of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE):
    • Dr. Frank Trice
    • Dr. Steven Schwartz
    • Dr. Denis (Chip) Simon
  • Dr. Alan Selbst has served as Treasurer of the AAE and Dr. Jeffrey Hoover has served on the Board of Directors.
  • Alumni practice in every major city in Texas and in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington.
  • Dr. Michael Jeansonne, Class of 1990, generously supports endodontic graduate student attendance at the Annual Sessions of the American Association of Endodonists. In addition, he has established two endowed funds that will support the Program into the future.
  • Volunteer faculty members and alumni of the program from the private practice of endodontic are crucial to the success of the program. These volunteers include:
    • Dr. Kim Freeman
    • Dr. Jeffrey Hoover
    • Dr. Scott Janse
    • Dr. Zach Schnoor
    • Dr. Alan Selbst
  • The faculty to student ratio during clinic sessions is 1:4.
  • A varied patient pool provides residents with a wide range of clinical experiences. Patients are referred from:
    • undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students
    • the GPR and AEGD Programs
    • the Pediatric Dentistry Program
    • other advanced specialty education programs
    • private general dental practitioners
  • One of our 3 rd year residents, Dr. Steven Benjamin, is presently doing a research project in collaboration with NASA.
  • One faculty member, Dr. Scott Makins, received a $50,000 grant from the Texas Telecommunication Infrastructure Board (TIF) to initiate and support digital radiography in the graduate endodontics clinic.
  • Presently, there are 4 full-time specialty trained endodontic faculty associated with the program. Three of the 4 are Board Certified by the American Board of Endodontics.
  • Presently, there are 2 part-time specialty trained faculty associated with the program
    • One is 0.6 FTE and is also specialty trained in oral diagnosis-radiology.
    • One is in full-time private endodontic practice and is Board Certified.
  • Presently the program accepts two students each year from an applicant pool of between 40-50 well qualified candidates
  • If the new dental school building becomes a reality, we plan to expand the program with additional operatories and additional residents.
