UTDB Centennial Speakers Series
Faculty, staff and students are invited to hear nationally renowned John O. Burgess, D.D.S., M.S., assistant dean for clinical research at Louisiana State University’s School of Dentistry, present a Restorative Dentistry Update. Burgess will speak from noon-1 p.m., Friday, July 15, DB Room 132. A reception for Burgess will follow at 4 p.m. in the Dental Branch lobby.
All are invited: Former Surgeon General and others to visit
M. Joycelyn Elders, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General and other special guests will speak during the American Medical Student Association’s 2005 Primary Care Leadership Training Program at the Dental Branch, DB Room 207. Elders, whose visit is sponsored by the Lone Star Legacy Society, will speak at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 27.
Together, the Dental Branch and Medical School are hosting this year’s training program Monday, July 25-Friday, July 29. new faculty, staff and research postdocs to the UT Dental Branch
Meet: Joel J. Napenas, director
of the General Practice Residency Program
Joel J. Napenas, D.D.S., is a native of Brantford, Ontario, Canada and a 2002 graduate of the School of Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He also completed training in a General Practice Residency program at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, followed by a two-year program in Oral Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Napenas takes a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal lesions, salivary gland disorders, and orofacial pain aside from providing dental treatment of medically compromised patients.
He serves as principal and co-investigator in clinical research protocols involving breast cancer patients and patients with liver disease. In his spare time, Napenas enjoys composing and playing the piano, golfing, biking and spending time with his family. He is a newlywed and is looking forward to his relocation to Texas and joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Houston Dental Branch in August.
Meet: Sylvia Perez, Research Coordinator I
Sylvia Perez joined the UT Dental Branch Office of Research on June 20, bringing with her 23 years of experience in grants and contracts from her time at Baylor College of Medicine.
“Being with Baylor since 1982, I would say I needed a change. I had heard wonderful things about Laura Warner (Administrative Services Officer for Research) and others working in the research office,” she said. “So, when I learned about an opening here at UT, I jumped on the opportunity.”
As Research Coordinator I, Perez will assist with the preparation of grants, contracts and HIPAA documents, along with animal and human subject protocol.
