Saliva may lead to cancer detection
Charles Streckfus, D.D.S., professor in the department of Diagnostic Sciences, will present “Identification of Cancer Related Biomarkers in Saliva,” noon, Friday, Oct. 7, at the Dental Branch, Room 132. Learn about the years of research Streckfus has invested in the traits of saliva as a possible way to detect cancer.
The presentation is sponsored by the UT Dental Branch Research Committee and the Houston Chapter of the American Association of Dental Branch Research, along with UT-TORCH. A one-hour continuing education credit is available. Sack lunches are welcome and cookies will be served.
Texas Medical Center honors former Dental Branch
dean with street
The Texas Medical Center will honor former Dental Branch dean and TMC founder, Frederick C. Elliott, D.D.S., with a street bearing his name. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 14, in the Dental Branch lobby, with guests walking to the nearby street sign and returning to the school for a reception. Please join the celebration.
Elliott served as dean from 1932-52 and was instrumental in breathing life into the young and struggling dental school. He was instrumental in generating funding for the construction of our current building, which at the time it opened was a state-of-the-art facility. In addition to his efforts in dentistry, Elliott was the lead visionary and one of the founders of the Texas Medical Center.
Founders’ Fun Fest is Friday
As an expression of appreciation for the hard work that students, faculty and staff have put forth in the last year, and especially the past month, the annual Founders’ Fun Fest will take place 2-6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, at the Hornberger Conference Center. Everyone is invited. Music, food, drinks, fellowship and a few surprises are in store for the entire health science center community.

Let’s show Houston that oral health is an important part of overall health, by representing dentistry in a big way. During our Centennial we want to not only celebrate our past contributions to health care, but also demonstrate the Dental Branch’s commitment to future health.
Join the team of Dental Branch walkers for breakfast, exercise, fellowship and lots of fun at 8 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at Sam Houston Park.

ASDA conference
The American Student Dental Association annual conference, hosted by the UT Dental Branch this year, served as the platform for the school to receive two awards.
The Dental Branch won honorable mention in the Crest Healthy Smiles 2010 Program for the development of the “Miles of Smiles Day” at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston. In addition, Alice Luan, a fourth-year dental student, who served as an ASDA representative, was named the “Delegate of the Year” for the local region.
Darryl Baucum, a second-year dental student, sent a note of thanks to the ASDA officers and students involved. He also expressed his appreciation for the support of the faculty and administration:
“The willing involvement of the Dental Branch faculty and administration to participate in such an important event associated with dental student issues is more than any student organization could ask for. Being able to openly communicate and participate with the faculty, not only during events like this, but throughout our dental education is what makes the Dental Branch such a unique and special place to spend our time learning the skills for our future career.”
Your chance to talk
Do you read Distinctions, The Leader, HealthLeader or News On The Go, and think: “I know what this publication needs”? If so, it’s time to talk about it.
Join in one of the following focus groups to speak your mind about the university’s print and online publications. Join Chris McKee, Ph.D., from the Office of Outcomes Assessment and Biostatistical Services, to discuss university publications and other communications. To ensure freedom of expression, no member of the publications staff from Public Affairs will be present. A light lunch or dinner will be served.
Each session is limited to 15 participants. For reservations, contact Dustin.Childers@uth.tmc.edu or (713) 500-3258.
