Dental
hygiene student Cheryl Josserme received the award for
the "Outstanding Dental Hygiene Student in the
State of Texas" at the Texas Student American Dental
Hygienists Association annual session in Richardson.
The School of Dental Hygiene also received three of
the four state-wide scholarships offered and won both
Table Clinic Awards. Congratulations to the school and
to Director Nina Infante.
Dental Branch faculty, Kamal Busaidy, an Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeon, has been elected the president of the Arab
American Medical Association, Houston Chapter, for 2006.
The Arab American Medical Association is a national
charitable organization whose members are health care
professionals from the fields of dentistry, optometry,
podiatry, health care research and chiropractors. The
Dental Branch is proud of Busaidy for this accomplishment,
in which the Dental Branch will be represented. More

The UT Dental Branch was present during the Medical Camp
in Jasper, TX, held in early February. Four hundred and thirty
patients were seen overall, with dental screenings being performed
on 75 percent of these patients, according to Nadarajah Vigneswaran,
B.D.S., D.M.D., associate professor of Diagnostic Sciences,
who coordinated the effort.
Thanks go to senior dental students Chase Baker, Kacey Howell,
Ryan Leonhart and Armando Salazar, as well as dental assistants
Elma Gallardo, Maria Martinez and Marina Munoz. Gene Stevenson,
D.D.S., assistant professor of Diagnostic Sciences, Tracey
Goodwin, D.D.S., assistant professor of Restorative Dentistry
and James Stewart, staff member in the department of Prosthodontics,
were also extremely instrumental in the effort.
Dental Branch faculty member Charles Streckfus, D.D.S., professor
of Diagnostic Sciences, is featured in this month’s
Distinctions for his work in saliva research. View the story

As 2005 came to a close, the Department of Prosthodontics
honored deserving students and faculty.

Catherine M. Flaitz, D.D.S.,
dean of the Dental Branch, was the first recipient of
the Prosthodontic Department’s Outstanding Achievement
Medallion for her significant impact on the department’s
goal of preparing each dental student to reach his or
her potential. The medallion was designed by the faculty
members, who will select outstanding students from the
preclinic and clinic prosthodontic courses each year.

Congratulations to all the outstanding faculty, staff and
students who served and the department of Prosthodontics.
Faculty and staff of the UT Dental Branch raked in the STAR
Awards at the annual event that honors years of service with
the institution. Congratulations to Rodney Beetar, D.D.S.,
professor in the department of Prosthodontics, who has served
for 30 years — the longest amount of time recognized
