Dental students win national awards

  • Dental student Maria Trujillo just received the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) summer dental student award. Trujillo will spend a summer conducting research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The NIDCR Summer Dental Student Award is designed to promote the professional careers of talented dental students through exposure to the latest advances in oral health research. Participation may result in the presentation of research findings at a scientific meeting and co-authorship of scientific publications.

  • Justin Wright, second-year dental student, has been awarded a student research fellowship by the American Association for Dental Research for his project, “Characterization of Functional Interaction between PITX2, LEF-1, and Beta-Catenin.” His scientific mentor was Brad Amendt, Ph.D., associate professor and director, Institute of Biosciences and Technology, Texas A&M Health Science Center. Karen Storthz, Ph.D., associate dean for Research, UT Dental Branch, was his faculty mentor.

Congratulations go to Maria and Justin for their hard work!

Thomas and Bebermeyer publish article

Rick Bebermeyer, D.D.S., professor of Restorative Dentistry and Lisa Thomas, D.D.S., associate professor in Diagnostic Sciences, recently published “Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health Care Settings: A Review of Current Resources.” The paper was published in Acta Stomatologica Naissi, the official publication of the University of Nis, located in Serbia.

The article was written in English, but was translated to Serbian by Rade Paravina, D.D.S., Ph.D., instructor in Oral Biomaterials. Paravina, who is from Serbia, felt that sharing information regarding standards in dental practice with this part of the world was important. It also shows a willingness to share information with other professionals around the world.
