Careers in dentistry

John A. Valenza, D.D.S., executive associate dean and Jayne McWherter, associate professor of dental hygiene, were quoted in Sunday's issue of the Houston Chronicle’s Employment Section.

Valenza and McWherter discussed careers in dentistry and dental hygiene, respectively, including the requirements for enrollment in schools as well as the demand in these professions.

Many thanks go to Dr. Valenza and Ms. McWherter for representing the Dental Branch in the news, and establishing the school as a leader in dental education.

President’s Update

The next President's Update scheduled for James T. Willerson, M.D., at the Dental Branch is noon, Tuesday, April 11, Room 207. Other upcoming updates are:

  • 7:30 a.m. and Noon, Friday, April 7, Medical School, Room B.605
  • Noon, Thursday, April 13, School of Nursing and Student Community Center, Room 120.

As is tradition, President Willerson will discuss budget issues and upcoming university activities.


Test to be conducted — don't be alarmed

At 7 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, Fire Life Safety and Emergency Preparedness, will conduct an annual inspection of the warning/manual & automatic fire system activation devices. The inspection will require the activation of the strobes/horn/automated announcement devices.

The Texas Association of Women Dentists will host a blood drive benefit, 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, DB Room 130, to benefit the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. To donate or make a pledge, contact: Melissa.D.Lent@uth.tmc.edu.


Chen wins travel award

Committee on the status of women logo  

Jung-Wei Chen, D.D.S., clinical assistant professor of Pediatrics and a student at the School of Health Information Sciences, received a travel award from the Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) to attend the American Association of Dental Research (AADR) annual meeting, this past March. Chen presented at the AADR meeting and again at the American Dental Education Association meeting in Orlando.

Chen has also been invited to be a guest of the CSW Distinguished Professional Woman's Award banquet, Dec. 7, at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Facility.

Career Development, a course offered by the Human Resources Department, will be 9-11 a.m., Friday, April 21, Dental Branch 139.
