It was a relaxing end to a long work week and two days spent at the Greater Houston Dental Society Star of the South meeting, April 20-22. The UT Dental Branch at Houston’s New Century Celebration offered food, drinks and good company for alumni, faculty, staff and students who attended the annual dental convention. Periodontics professor honored by alma mater

Millicent Goldschmidt, Ph.D., who holds a joint appointment as professor of Periodontics at the Dental Branch and professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the Medical School, has been named the 2006 Outstanding Alumnus from Purdue University’s Department of Biological Sciences. She will be recognized at an October awards ceremony.

Goldschmidt also will speak at the May 2006 International Symposium on Salmonella and Salmonellosis in Saint Malo, France, on “Review of Biosensor, Microarray and Nanotechnologies used in the Detection and Identification of Salmonellae.”


Bouquot inducted into academy

Jerry Bouquot, D.D.S., chair of Diagnostic Sciences, was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology this week. Bouquot is only the second non-Canadian to be invited to be a member of that organization.


Frey wins volunteerism award

School of Dental Hygiene faculty member Donna Warren-Morris, who served as Dental Hygiene Table Clinic Coordinator, was instrumental in organizing this year’s table clinic topics.


SADHA & Dental Hygiene class officers named

The 2006-2007 School of Dental Hygiene Class & Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association officers were named during a ceremony April 19. Left to right: Class President, Amber Hart; Class Vice President, Jenny Pham; Class Secretary, Jodi Meyer; Class Treasurer, Allison Samo; Class Historian, Katie McLaren; American Dental Education Association Representative, Robyn Paulsen; and SADHA President, Linda Lozano.

Margo Melchor, one of the SADHA advisors, said, “I am looking forward to a wonderful, productive year. These officers will do an outstanding job with their duties and will represent their class and the SADHA organization well."


Edwards honored by dental hygiene students

Shirley Edwards, dispensary assistant II, was honored during the Student American Dental Hygienists Association meeting on April 19 for her dedication and commitment to her job. Edwards has served at the Dental Branch for 13 years.

“Once I began to work with the students, they became my reason for being here. They come and talk to me about anything,” Edwards said. “I am their mama and their grandma. I am here to push them and keep them focused because no one did that for me.”

Edwards said she was enrolled in nursing school when she had to stop and starting working two jobs to support her family. “I always tell them to stay focused and believe in their dream.”

“I love my job here at the Dental Branch. I thank Ms. Mary Ann Adkisson and others who gave me a chance and trained me.”

Edwards is the wife of Roosevelt Edwards. She has four children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Event coordinators and sponsors deem this year’s ride a success.


Media specialist to leave the UT Health Science Center

Shannon Rasp, media relations specialist in the Office of Public Affairs, whose responsibilities include pitching stories to the media about the UT Dental Branch, has taken a new position with the Harris County Hospital District as a Senior Media Relations Communicator. Rasp’s last day with the UT Health Science Center will be May 5.

Rasp has worked at the health science center for nearly six years. Her service to the Dental Branch has resulted in Dental Branch students, researchers and administrators appearing on local and national television shows and in print publications. One of her most noteworthy contributions to the Dental Branch was serving as project manager for the production of the March 2005 Texas Dental Journal, in which the Dental Branch Centennial was highlighted.

   

Rasp, a former newspaper and magazine reporter, made the transition to media relations in 1994 with a stint in the press office of the Houston Astros. She worked in the media offices of major corporations and another university before joining the health science center in 2000, where she has won several awards for her work.
