Sixty-million dollars in Tuition Revenue Bonds to fund the
construction of a new building for the UT Dental Branch have
been approved by the Texas House and Senate. Gov. Rick Perry
has 20 days to sign the bill. Once the bill is signed we will
provide more information about recognition of this milestone
and construction plans for the new facility.

For the second year in a row, the Advanced Education
Program in General Dentistry has produced residents
who have received the Cooksey Award. First-year dental
residents Nassem Arfai, D.D.S., and Zayd Hashmi, D.D.S.,
received the Edward J. Cooksey Award for presenting
the best table clinic in all categories during the Star
of the South dental meeting in April.
In addition to the Cooksey awards their presentation
of “Composite Restorations – Layering Technique”
also received first place in the “Dentists”
category for table clinics. The residents’ faculty
mentor was Sudarat Kiat-Amnuay, D.D.S., assistant professor
of Restorative Dentistry. Arfai was also the primary
author and presenter for another table clinic at the
event.

Saturday,
May 6, a delegation from the UT Dental Branch traveled
with the dental van to participate in the Texas Dental
Association’s Mission of Mercy in Tyler. Approximately
600 needy patients were seen. The dental van team participated
by performing extractions, fillings and cleanings. |

Participants were Stephen Schorr, D.D.S., clinical assistant
professor of Periodontics; Helena Tapias, D.D.S., clinical
assistant professor of Restorative Dentistry and Diagnostic
Sciences; Tracey Godwin, D.D.S., assistant professor of Restorative
Dentistry; Maria Martinez, dental assistant; Pat Henshaw,
dental assistant III; Marina Munoz, dental assistant II and
Dental Hygiene students Cheryl Josserme and Ruben Cantu.
The department of Human Resource-Training and Development
will facilitate “Effective Communications,” 9-11
a.m., Friday, May 19, Dental Branch, Room 139. Register

The Seventh Annual Advances in Teaching and Learning Regional
Conference will be 8:30 a.m,-5
p.m., Thursday, May 18, at the School of Nursing and
Student Community Center, with a good showing from Dental
Branch faculty.
Jung Wei-Chen, D.D.S., will be a podium presenter with her
topic of “A Combination of Multimedia, Problem Based
Learning and interactive Course Design.” Joel Napenas,
D.D.S., program director of the General Practice Residency
Program, and Kenneth Abramovitch, D.D.S., associate professor
of Diagnostic Sciences, will present in the poster competition.

The retirement of Edward Montgomery, Ph.D., professor of
Integrative Biology and Pharmacology, will be celebrated during
a reception, 2-4 p.m., Wednesday,
May 31, in the Cooley Conference Room, Dental Branch
Room 3.095
Montgomery taught for the Dental Branch for 32 years and
has spent the last two years with the Medical School following
the merger of the basic science departments.
Nurses Week, May 6-12, gave cause to recognize the hard work
performed by nurses at the Dental Branch. Mary Ann Adkisson,
director of Clinical Services, and Janie Fitzgerald, staff
nurse II, should be commended. If you missed the opportunity
to thank the nurses among us, it’s never too late to
show appreciation.
