A poster presentation from the Dental Branch won a $500 award
as best of its type at the Seventh Annual Advances in Teaching
and Learning Regional Conference May 18 at the School of Nursing
and Student Community Center.
Kenneth Abramovitch, D.D.S., associate professor of Diagnostic
Sciences; Jerry Bouquot, D.D.S., chair of Diagnostic Sciences;
and Paula O’Neill, Ed.D., won best poster for “Innovative
Approach to Teaching Radiology Interpretation in the Classroom.”
The conference was organized by a health science center-wide
committee led by Cynthia Phelps, Ph.D., assistant professor
in the UT School of Health Information Sciences at Houston.
Sponsors are the UT Health Science Center Office of Academic
Affairs, School of Health Information Sciences, School of
Nursing, Blackboard, and Your Doctor Program.

The UT Dental Branch graduated the class of 2006 on Friday,
May 19. During the ceremony 62 students received D.D.S. degrees,
35 received Dental Hygiene bachelor’s degrees, 12 received
Dental Hygiene certificates and 31 received degrees in advanced
education.
The ceremony was conducted by Catherine M. Flaitz, D.D.S.,
dean of the Dental Branch. Stephen Schwartz, D.D.S., second
vice president of the American Dental Association, a noted
Houston endodontist and UTDB alumnus, served as the speaker.
Schwartz is past president of the Greater Houston Dental Society
and the Texas Dental Association. Schwartz is also the chairman
of the upcoming capital campaign.
All 36 students in the School of Dental Hygiene passed the
National Board Examination. The class scored well above the
national average, while eleven of the students scored in the
90s. Well done, School of Dental Hygiene.
Shirley Edwards, a 13-year employee of the dispensary at
the Dental Branch, was honored by students in the Dental Hygiene
program during their annual banquet. Read this week’s

Pedro Trejo, D.D.S., and Gina Bonaventura, D.D.S., clinical
assistant professors of Periodontics, authored, along with
outside colleagues, “Effect of mechanical and antiseptic
therapy on peri-implant mucositis: an experimental study in
monkeys,” which is featured in the Clinical Oral Implant
Research in June 2006.
A fire drill is scheduled for Thursday,
May 25, at the Dental Branch Building. When the fire
alarm is sounded, all occupants should cooperate with Area
Safety Liaisons, proceed to the nearest stairwell exit and
