Janet Grobe Hood, D.D.S., and a team of faculty
and students from the Dental Branch traveled to Nicaragua
earlier this summer on a mission trip.
The team saw about 450 patients in three rural communities
and their work consisted of 800 extractions, 122 restorations,
along with cleanings and fluoride varnish treatments.
In addition, the team conducted a health fair to promote
oral disease prevention.
Hood said this was the first year that the team had
the equipment to do restorations and in future years,
they hope to turn around the ratio of extractions to
fillings.
“Every time I go, I learn more from the Nicaraguan
people about courage in the face of adversity and being
thankful for what we have,” Hood said. “I
also am amazed by the teamwork, dedication, and incredible
attitude of our students and the medical team we go
with.” |
