Welcome new students  

The UT Dental Branch welcomes 84 new students into the D.D.S. program and 40 new students into the School of Dental Hygiene. The arrival of both groups was celebrated with White Coat Ceremonies in early August.  Photos from both ceremonies will appear on the UT Dental Branch homepage (http://www.db.uth.tmc.edu/) next week. Help make the newest members of our family feel welcome!

The Freshmen and Sophomore Preclinical Awards, along with the Junior Clinical Awards for 2005-2006  were recently presented by the department of Prosthodontics. The winners are pictured below.

A Healthy Back-To-School

Sixty children were seen during the back to school event at Fort Bend Family Health Center's New Hope Clinic on August 5. A team from the Dental Branch provided the children with sealants, cleaning and fluoride treatments.

Participants were Tracey Godwin, D.D.S., assistant professor of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials, Dental Assistant Sandra Rivas, and students Maria Martinez, Violeta Zambrano, Jamie Trinh, Linda Lozano, Shaista Vigil, Allison Samo and Katrina Knox.

Dental Hygiene alumni volunteers were Cheryl Josserme, Ruben Cantu, Tatiana Ramirez, Chrystal Donnell, Casey Flatt and Mimi Bach.

Celebrating the last year  

Fourth-year students, faculty and staff are invited to help celebrate the beginning of the fourth-year students’ last year at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, at 5203 Hwy 69 South, in Kountze, TX (77265). Kountze is located in the Beaumont area.

The celebration will take place at the home of student John Landis. Fried fish, sodas, and beer will be served for your enjoyment. There will be a moonwalk for children.

Family and friends of fourth-year students, faculty and staff are also invited.

Reminder: TB Testing

Please remember that all faculty and staff who come in contact with patients need to have an annual TB Test. If you missed the first testing time this week, there will be another opportunity 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 22. The test will be read 11 a.m.-1 p.m , Thursday, Aug. 24.


Dean speaks at charity dental conference

Dentists Who Care - Prtotecting the Smiles of America's Children

Dental Branch Dean Catherine M. Flaitz, D.D.S. was a guest speaker at the “Dentists Who Care” 10th Anniversary Charity Dental Conference, Aug. 11- Aug. 12.

Flaitz presented “A Round-Up of Symptomatic Oral Diseases, Newest Devices and Latest Treatments,” as part of the conference, which sought to promote the mission of the organization — improving and enhancing the quality of life for indigent children through access to dental care.

Kathy Roth, D.D.S., president-elect of the American Dental Associaton was also a featured speaker.

News on the Go going to Mondays

Plan your events and plan your week ahead with the new, once-weekly edition of News on the Go. Starting Monday, Sept. 11, NOTG will publish once a week on Mondays. The newly consolidated issue still will have all the health science center news and event information you're used to getting from NOTG, but now will make just one weekly deposit in your busy inbox.

The deadline for the weekly issue will be 10 a.m. on the Thursday prior to publication.

  • Submissions of non-date-related information should continue to be made by e-mail to newsonthego@uth.tmc.edu
  • Submission of date-related information, such as lectures, luncheons, or conferences, should be made to the UT Health Science Center-wide Web Calendar. Please submit items early enough that they make it through the approval process prior to the appropriate Thursday deadline.
