DB People ~ Gwen Aubry

DB People is a new feature of the UTDBeflash which will highlight a student, resident, employee or member of the faculty each week. Their profile will showcase how they are advancing oral health education, research or patient care.

Often the first person a patient of the Dental Branch will meet is Gwen Aubry. In her they find a friendly smile and listening ear.

Aubry, senior support assistant, who works the first floor reception desk at the Dental Branch, spends her day registering patients, providing information and taking payments for dental care. On an average day she will see 200 patients — a busy job, but she enjoys doing it.

“I love helping people,” Aubry said. “Many times patients are in pain and frustrated. They want to be greeted with a smile and met by people who act like they care.”

Aubry feels that a positive attitude and helpful demeanor are important for anyone in a front-line position such as hers. “We want them to have a good experience here at the school so they will continue to come back,” she said.

Before joining the Patient Services team at the Dental Branch, Aubry worked with students in the Alief Independent School District.

She has three children, Roderick, Olivia and Christopher. As a family they enjoy visiting museums, having picnics in the park or watching movies at home.

“My children spent so much time in the library when they were young that they grew up loving to read,” she said. “Sometimes we will just go to Barnes and Noble to enjoy some books and a good cup of coffee.”

If you know anyone in your department who would make a good DB People profile, send the name to dbnewsdesk@uth.tmc.edu.

Dr. Busaidy wins an International Program Award

Kamal Fawzy Busaidy, D.D.S., is a recipient of one of the 10 International Program Awards given this year, sponsored by the Office of International Programs at the UT Health Science Center at Houston.

International Programs Awards provide seed money to the most worthwhile endeavors of international collaboration and increase the individual and collective awareness of the importance of international programs within the UT Health Science Center.

The program also includes faculty from the Dental Branch visiting Oman to provide workshops and lectures on specified topics to the Omani trainees. The Omani residency program is sponsored by the Ministry of Health.

Potential benefits to the program including the potential for establishment of stronger international clinical and educational ties, particularly with the Middle East.

The International Programs Award seeks to reward projects that foster international collaboration between various constituencies of the UT Health Science Center and academic institutions of higher learning throughout the world. Congratulations to Dr. Busaidy.

Dental van services expand to East Texas

The mobile dental van has a new agreement with ETHAN (East Texas Health Access Network,) which is taking it to East Texas two days each month to provide dental care.

The first trip, Aug. 23-25, was to Woodville, an extremely underserved area. Thirty-three patients were seen.

Participants were Tracey Godwin, D.D.S.; Maria Martinez, dental assistant; Pat Henshaw, dental assistant; Jeff James, fourth-year dental student; and Kevin Sameti, fourth-year dental student.

Wish our dental van team well as they expand their service area and continue to provide care where it’s needed most.
