DB People … Darrel Gonzales

With today’s dependence on technology in higher education, Darrel Gonzales, Audio/ Video Supervisor at the UT Dental Branch, stays busy.

Since 2000 Gonzales has been responsible for ensuring that the audio and video equipment in the classrooms is set up properly and runs smoothly. He also records instructional videos for faculty, which are often then uploaded to Blackboard. In addition, Gonzales assists, when needed, in the Clinical Simulation and Learning Center. He also serves as a back-up photographer for the school.

“This is a job where I have a chance to apply what I learned in school,” Gonzales said the Houston Art Institute graduate.

Gonzales enjoys his career so much, that the majority of his free time is spent working in audio/video technology as well. Since 1999 Gonzales has worked as an Audio/Video Technician for La Mafia, Inc., the three-time Grammy Award winning band.

He has traveled internationally with the group and just this past weekend traveled to shows in Houston, San Antonio and Zua Zua, Mexico. “That is the best of both worlds,” Gonzales said. “I get to do what I am trained to do and enjoy good music.” Gonzales also plays the guitar.

Prior to his start in audio and video Gonzales served five years in the U.S. Marine Corps. on Embassy duty in Nairobi, Kenya and Bogata, Columbia. He can be reached at Darrell.Gonzales@uth.tmc.edu (713) 500-4153.

Mobile dental van at the City Fest

Houston’s City Fest, the first weekend in October, was quite a hit among Houstonians. The dental van participated in conjunction with Texas Children’s Hospital to provide 288 screening and 247 fluoride varnishes. Approximately 1,500 toothbruses were given to city of Houston residents. Dental van staff and five periodontics residents helped to make the event a success.
