The UT Dental Branch recognizes National Dental Hygiene Month

In recognition of National Dental Hygiene Month, Dental Hygiene students will be educating the Dental Branch community about the education, role and responsibilities of a dental hygienist.

An informational display board will be located in the first floor hallway behind the main lobby, beginning Monday, Oct. 16-Friday, Oct. 20 to promote public awareness about the importance of dental hygiene to the profession of dentistry. Please make sure to stop by and view the poster.

All  dental  students are eligible to enter a drawing by completing a dental-hygiene questionnaire. The drawing, Monday, Oct. 23, will give three students a chance to win prizes such as Oral-B triumph toothbrushes, tote bags, and UTDB t-shirts.

The faculty of the dental hygiene program is proud of the dental hygiene students in their efforts to promote their chosen profession.

The month’s celebration is sponsored annually by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), to stress the importance of proper oral hygiene. This year’s theme is “A Healthy Smile Lasts a Lifetime.”

The chosen theme comes from ADHA’s decision to focus on proper early childhood oral healthcare. With scientific indications pointing to a link between oral health and systemic disease, it is important to establish a good oral health routine at a young age so it can become part of their daily routine as children get older. And because dental decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood, there will be a continued emphasis on the prevention of early childhood caries.

Because Registered Dental Hygienists play a key role in the education of parents and children for prevention of childhood caries, ADHA encourages hygienists across the nation to get involved in the 2006 National Dental Hygiene Health Month to increase awareness about the necessity of proper oral health for children.
