Yahuan Lou, Ph.D.,
brings the world of immunology to the UT Dental
Branch. Lou, professor of Diagnostic Sciences,
enjoys making the connection between his medical
research and dentistry on a daily basis.
Lou, an immunologist who also
holds joint appointments at the UT Medical School,
the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and
Baylor College of Medicine, has been a member
of the Dental Branch faculty since 2000.
His research focuses on how the
immune system produces autoimmune diseases. He
has received funding from the National Institutes
of Health for his work on the roles of immune cells
in kidney disease and ovarian functions. However,
he is equally as excited about the possibility
of further integrating immunology with dentistry.
“Originally I was a part
of the Department of Basic Sciences, but when the
department was moved to the Medical School, I was
asked to stay on board as a researcher and teacher,” he
said. “I am pleased that I did.”
Today Lou teaches a half-course
on microbiology and immunology to first-year dental
students. He also teaches immunology to graduate
residents at the school. “In |
to
teaching, I am also an active researcher,” he
said. “Therefore, I can bring the latest
information and methods to my students.”
Perhaps most exciting is Lou’s
work with James Katancik, D.D.S., Ph.D., chair
of Periodontics, to develop a Center for Oral
Immunology in the future.
“Immunology is important to
every aspect of the body, including the mouth,” Lou
said. “Once bacteria and infection are present,
the immune system is automatically involved.”
Lou and his wife Jean, who is also
employed at the Dental Branch, have two daughters.
In addition to spending time with his family, Lou
enjoys long distance running, recreational reading
on military history and listening to classical
music. He can be reached at 713-500-4059. His office
is at DB 3.108C.

Leslye Griffith, senior support specialist
in the UT Dental Branch Library, passed away suddenly Monday
evening from health complications. Griffith began working
at the Dental Branch in September and will be missed by her
co-workers. No additional information regarding Griffith’s
death is available at this time.
Stephen Jessee, D.D.S., associate professor
and director of Clinical Education, was appointed by the
Texas State Board of Dental Examiners at their Nov. 10 meeting
to serve as an examiner for the Western Regional Examination
Board. It is an 8-year appointment.
In this role Jesse will serve as a grading
examiner or a floor examiner. Floor examiners serve as liaisons
between the candidates and the grading examiners to solve
problems that may arise during the exam.
Jessee will examine approximately 5-6 exams
each year throughout the U.S., excluding Texas. Jessee
has observed many WREB exams and has continually petitioned
the WREB to accept educators as examiners. Congratulations
Dr. Jessee!
- Veronique F. Delattre, D.D.S., associate professor
and Kim Chambers, director of Patient Services, have
been published in the November/December issue of the
Journal of Forensic Identification: Factors
Affecting the Acquisition of Antemortem Dental Records.

of Pediatric Dentistry, was recently published for
her article: Assessment of the effects of 2 sedation
regimens on cardiopulmonary parameters in pediatric
dental patients: a retrospective study. Chen’s

related factors and caries experience in asthmatic
children was also published.
Faculty and students are invited to the 2006
