Golf tournament produces scholarship funds for DB students

The UT Health Science Center at Houston’s 14th annual Golf Tournament provided $42,000 to 29 students in the health science center — 11 of those were from the UT Dental Branch. Congratulations to all who participated in the tournament and were awarded scholarships.


Kau presents at 3D symposium

Chung How Kau, B.D.S., M.S.c.D., associate professor of Orthodontics, represented the UT Dental Branch and the department of Orthodontics internationally as an invited speaker at the 3D symposium "Virtual Diagnosis and Treatment Planning of Cranio-Maxillofacial Deformity," hosted by the Division of Maxillofacial Surgery, St. Jan Hospital in Belgium.

Kau spoke on “Surface acquisition systems for facial analysis”. The two-day conference was Nov. 10-11 in the city of Bruges in Belgium. Congratulations to Dr. Kau.


Holiday toy drive

The UT Police Department’s annual holiday toy and gift drive will take place until Friday, Dec. 15. The drive benefits pediatric and adolescent patients at LBJ Hospital, Harris County Psychiatric Center and the Department of Internal Medicine’s K.I.N.D.E.Rx Clinic.

Infant and adolescent gifts are especially needed. A drop box is located in Dental Branch Room 493.

Pediatric Dentistry chairman, Fouad Salama, B.D.S., and six residents: Drs. Joi Shaw, Leena James, Ryan Cregger, Bret Ibarra, Jack Stalker, and Jamie Sahouria volunteered for The Health Museum’s annual Teddy Bear Check-Up, Dec. 2. The team staffed the “Tough Teeth” booth for the event.

UTDB Holiday Formal – everyone is invited

Pull out your finest and put on your dancing shoes. The UTDB Holiday Formal is next week! Students, faculty, staff and residents are invited to the Renaissance Hotel, 7p.m.-midnight, Thursday, Dec. 14 to celebrate the end of the year.

Tickets purchased before Tuesday, Dec. 12 are two for $25 and 1 for $15. Tickets purchased at the door are $17. Tickets are being sold by various students or can be ordered by emailing michelle.b.wilson@uth.tmc.edu.


TAWD helping a family in need

Members of the Texas Association of Women Dentists (TAWD) are sponsoring a family in need for the holidays. They are asking for your support. You can lend a hand by helping TAWD check some items off the list:

  • 7-year-old girl (pants/shirt size, 7; dress size, 8; shoe size, 13)
  • 4-year-old boy (pants/shirt size, 5; shoe size, 13)
  • Mom (pants size, 9; shirt/dress/blouse size, large)

The TAWD will be accepting monetary gifts as well as toy/clothing donations for this cause through Friday, Dec. 8.  At that time, we will purchase their specific requests and deliver them by Christmas. Questions? Contact: Amy.E.Edgemon@uth.tmc.edu.


Professional Development courses offered

  • “Renewing Your Enthusiasm for Work,” a Human Resources Course, will be 1-3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 15, University Center Tower 1505C. The course will use activities from books by experts in the field. It promises to be fun and interactive, while also providing ways you can restore balance in your daily life.
  • Turning Obstacles into Opportunities, 9-11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 20, University Center Tower 1505C. People who can handle adversity typically become the success stories of today and tomorrow.
