Congratulations to the class of 2007 for earning a
100 percent pass rate on the American Dental Association National
Dental Board Exam, Part II.
The two-day exam, taken by 60 students, measures basic and advanced
clinical knowledge of dentistry. During the exam, students use information
retained from the board review course directed by Deborah Franklin,
D.D.S., and courses taught throughout the four years of dental school.
. Therefore, many thanks go to all the Dental Branch faculty, staff
and administrators who were instrumental in the students’
success.
“It is exciting that everyone performed so well. We took
the test in our fourth year when students tend to get overwhelmed
and have a great deal to handle,” said Tricia Norris, fourth-year
class president. “I am proud that we were able to do so well.”
The class of 2007 also scored well on Part I of the exam during
their sophomore year. Their exam scores placed the Dental Branch
at sixth in the nation in 2005.

Now make sure to brush young man: Ron Collins, D.D.S., community
dentist and UTDB alumnus, reminds a young patient of the importance
of oral hygiene. |

Thanks to the participation and
support of so many volunteers, Give Kids a Smile Day at the
UT Dental Branch, Feb. 24, was a success.
UT Dental Branch faculty and Greater Houston Dental Society
(GHDS) volunteer community dentists treated 131 children and
four adults and performed 766 procedures, the equivalent of
$55,823 in care. An additional $4,230 was donated in supplies
and staff time.
The GHDS worked with three agencies to identify patients:
Epiphany Health Outreach Services (ECHOS), San Jose Clinic
and Communities in Schools.
Luz Maria Maldonado, a mother of three, called the event
“a blessing.”
“I was so excited to hear about this project,”
she said. “Dental care without dental insurance is extremely
expensive, especially with three children.” |

Peggy O’Neill, Ph.D., D.D.S., interim
associate dean for Patient Care, said the success of the event
can be credited to faculty, staff, students and volunteer
dentists who donated their time and energy for the greater
good of the community.
Watch the UTDB Web site in the coming days for a full
story and names of event volunteers. |
The UT Dental Branch hosted a Tri-School Clinical
meeting Feb. 13 with representatives from Baylor College of Dentistry
and the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. John
Valenza, D.D.S., executive associate dean; Peggy O’Neill,
Ph.D., D.D.S., interim associate dean for Patient Care; and Stephen
Jessee, D.D.S., associate professor and director of clinical education,
were instrumental in coordinating the meeting.
“This meeting is really all about sharing experiences to
improve teaching, patient care and clinical research. Even in today’s
electronic age, there’s really no substitute for sitting together
and discussing common and unique challenges, successes and failures,”
Valenza said.
Charles Streckfus, D.D.S., professor of Diagnostic
Sciences, and second-year dental student Sebastian Paige published
"Salivary analysis in the diagnosis and treatment of breast
cancer: A role for the general dentist,” in General Dentistry,
Volume 55, Number 2, March-April 2007. The journal is the peer-reviewed
journal of the Academy of General Dentistry.
John Valenza, D.D.S., executive associate dean, was
invited to speak in January at the Arizona School of Dentistry and
Oral Health on “Medically Compromised Patients – Things
We Need to Know.”
The presentation focused on the practical aspects of managing patients
with medical complications. Valenza discussed extremely applicable
treatment methods.
The presentation was given to second- and third-year students of
the new school. The current senior class will be the school’s
first graduates.
It is time to select the next Star Performer of the
UT Dental Branch at Houston. With the pace that our school has been
moving, we all know it takes dedicated team members. Submit their
names and information for a Star Performer Award, sponsored by the
Employee Relations Committee.
The deadline for submissions is Thursday, March 15. Visit
