Congratulations to Teaching Award Winners

Congratulations to William Tate, D.D.S., associate professor of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials, recipient of the John Freeman Award; Donald Belles, D.D.S., associate professor of Prosthodontics, recipient of the John P. McGovern Award; and Ann O’Kelley Wetmore, clinical assistant professor of Periodontics, recipient of the Lorna Bruning Award.

Each winner’s profile and photograph will be featured in next week’s DB People section of the UTDBeflash. Faculty are nominated and voted on by students. Below are student comments about the winners:

About Dr. Tate:

“Dr. Tate’s down-to-earth nature, amazing sense of humor and uncanny knack for explaining concepts in a way that is easy to grasp, are just a few of the qualities that I admire and respect. He expects our best, but reminds us that it is truly okay to make mistakes. He encourages and lifts our spirits, helps us laugh at our own experiences and puts in a significant amount of effort to prepare lectures that are informative and enjoyable.”

About Dr. Belles:

“Dr. Belles is a true dental professional. His knowledge of dentistry is absolutely amazing and he is always willing to share his knowledge with his students. He is available to help whenever assistance is needed and constantly challenges us to think through the dentistry that we are performing, guiding us to make good decisions for our patients.”

About Mrs. Wetmore:

“She is genuine, truly wanting each student to succeed and reach their full potential. She takes the time at the start of each clinic session to meet with students to see what they have planned for the appointment. She offers us advice on how to be successful and thorough. I am so thankful to have an instructor who is so honest and willing to teach us all that she has learned throughout her years of practice.”

DB student wins national community dentistry award

Dental Branch student Darryl Baucum won second place for the Predoctoral Dental Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Community Dentistry from the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. Baucum will be recognized and presented with the award during the National Oral Health Conference, April 30-May 2 in Denver, Colo.

The abstract that won Baucum the award, The UTDB: Crest Healthy Smiles, reported on the UTDB chapter of the American Student Dental Association and its role in a community service project that provided care to patients living in underserved areas.

In response to being recognized, Baucum said:
“I’m glad I can represent the school in such a positive manner. I have a great time working with the faculty and all my classmates. They are who enable me to receive these types of awards/honors. Without their help and support for programs such as these, these activities would not be a success.”

Baucum was nominated for the award by Kishore Shetty, D.D.S., director of the Medically Complex Patient Clinic.
