For the second consecutive year, Raouf Hanna, D.D.S., clinical assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics, won the first place in the Specialist category, taking home the Cooksey Award, which honors the top-placing table clinic in the overall competition.

Second place in the Specialist category went to Donald Belles, D.D.S, associate professor in the UTDB Department of Prosthodontics, for “Occlusal Disease.” Visit our photo page for a list of other winners and pictures of the first-place winners. Photos of the dance competition held Friday evening are included as well.

DB Faculty, Staff & Students Speak: Nearly 70 comments on building project

At a series of open houses in March, the UT Dental Branch asked its faculty, staff and students for feedback about the new building project, and the results are in – with comments as varied as the people who work here.

“Will the students have mailboxes in the new building?” … “Bus routes for those of us who take the park-and-ride buses?”… “Janitorial closets needed on each floor.” …“Shredding room.” … “There are not enough restrooms on each floor” … and so on. To read the full list of comments, CLICK HERE.

The comments were among topics covered at the April 10 meeting of the Oversight Task Force – one of five task forces working on plans for the Dental Branch Replacement Building. As currently drawn, it will be a six-floor complex in the new UT Research Park now under construction on the south campus of the Texas Medical Center. The new dental school should be complete in 2011.

“I think the comments were very helpful, and we’ve shared them with the architects,” said Executive Associate Dean John A. Valenza, D.D.S., chair of the Oversight Task Force.

The next phase of building design is critical, he noted. “This is where we take the block designs in my office to the next level … this next phase will be in excruciating detail – placing the plugs on the wall, the lights and data ports, etc.”

Later this month, higher-level UT executives will review the plans, with input about landscaping and other details. After that, the designs will be solid enough for the first official pricing estimate from the architects. Those numbers will be used as the basis for a presentation to the UT Board of Regents in May.

Final reports from the Academics, Patient Care, Preclinical/Simulation, Research and Technology Task Forces are posted on Blackboard for Dental Branch personnel to review.

Doctor’s Day at UTDB

Urgent Care Clinic Director and Associate Professor C.D. Johnson, D.D.S., and Associate Professor Sheila Koh, D.D.S., enjoy cake and punch at the Doctor’s Day Reception April 9 in the Cooley Conference Room. Traditionally, Doctor’s Day is March 30 but so many faculty members were out of town for conferences that the event was rescheduled. Young men and women get information on financial literacy, higher education, etiquette, beauty, health and career development at an event that unites students, educators, corporate sponsors and volunteers to celebrate the accomplishments of the students and provide tools for their future success. Donors are asked to contribute new or gently worn formal wear, shoes and handbags, or to donate cosmetics, dining or hair salon gift certificates.
