 Komen Foundation donation supports salivary diagnostics research
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has awarded an Investigator-Initiated Research Grant of just over $380,000 to the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in support of work at the UT Dental Branch (UTDB). Dental Branch researchers are analyzing saliva for protein markers that reveal breast cancer. Pictured from left are Komen Foundation Board President Marjorie Landry, Professor Charles F. Dr. Simmons to join UTHSC-H team at Washington conference
A team from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, including the Dental Branch's Graduate Practice Residency Program Director and Associate Professor Raymond K. Simmons, D.D.S., D.MSc., has been chosen to attend the 2008 Institute for Interprofessional Prevention Education Sept. 4-5 in Washington, D.C. The event is sponsored by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research. Others on the team include Nancy H. Busen, Ph.D., R.N.; Joan C. Engebretson, Dr.PH., R.N.; and Ann-Marie Hedberg, Dr.PH., R.D. The primary goal of the Institute is to address high-priority health problems by advancing interprofessional training and increasing the emphasis on prevention in health professions education programs. The Association for Prevention Teaching and Research is the professional organization for the academic medical and public health community dedicated to prevention research and interprofessional education.

Brown Bag at the DB: 'Active Shooter on Campus'
All faculty, residents, fellows, staff and students are encouraged to attend the Brown Bag training session, "Active Shooter on Campus & Emergency Preparedness," from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24 in DBB Room 207. Featured speakers will be Sgt. G. Arenas of UTPD and Kevin Roberts of Environmental Health and Safety. Cookies and water will be provided for the first 100 people. They are sponsored by the University Classified Staff Council Staff Development Committee.
Commemorative hammers will go to contributors
