Dental Branch teams help raise money at 2008 Heart Walk

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston was well-represented at the 2008 Heart Walk Nov. 1 with 29 teams, including at least three from the Dental Branch. The annual 5K walk is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. The final amount raised isn't available yet because AHA is still accepting donations through the end of November. For information on donating, visit www.houstonheartwalk.org. Dental Branch team captains included third-year dental student Precious King; assistant chief radiologic technologist Inga-Lill Leon, C.D.A., L.R.T., and Mamie Ellis, executive assistant in the Department of Endodontics. King's team included Holly Pavlick McIver, Poonam Vallabhbhai, Vinitha Jacob and Ben Thompson. Leon's team included Liliana Arvizu, Sara Zelaya, Marina Munoz and Elma Gallardo. Ellis' team members were Loraine Alexander, Imani Alexander, Shirley Edwards and Gisela Velasquez, D.D.S. Several team members brought friends and family to participate as well. Dr. Kau gives T C White Prize Lecture
in Glasgow, Scotland
Chung H. Kau, B.D.S., Ph.D., associate professor in the UT Dental Branch Department of Orthodontics, was chosen to give the T C White Prize Lecture in October at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. His topic was "Three Dimensional Cone Beam Computerised Tomography - a Revolution in Dental Diagnosis." Kau discussed the advantages the third dimension gives to clinical diagnosis, treatment planning and patient education. The lecture focused on the digital age of dentistry with cutting edge technology of cone beam CT imaging and discussed the range of issues associated with this technology.

DH2 selling Thanksgiving pies
The UTDB Dental Hygiene Class of 2009 is taking orders for Flying Saucer Pies in a variety of flavors, including pumpkin, apple, pecan, peach, cherry, coconut cream, chocolate cream, lemon cream and strawberry. Schwartz, Streckfus named to ADA posts
The October edition of TDA Today, a publication of the Texas Dental Association, included an article by UT Dental Branch alumnus S. Jerry Long, D.D.S., an American Dental Association trustee for the 15th District. Long announced that Stephen F. Schwartz, D.D.S., has been appointed to the 2008 ADA Committee on Dental Education and Related Matters, and that Charles F. Streckfus, D.D.S., has been appointed to the Council on Scientific Affairs. Schwartz is chair of the Open to Health fundraising initiative at the Dental Branch, and Long is vice chair. Streckfus is a professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. An article about his research at the Dental Branch was featured on Page 3 of TDA Today.
UTDB student organization wins ASDA award
The UT Dental Branch Chapter of the American Student Dental Association was recognized in the October edition of ASDA News for winning an IDEAL ASDA Award in the "Activities" category at the 2008 Annual Session in Scottsdale, AZ. ASDA officers from UTDB include Steve Chumbley, president; Ross Hunter, vice president; Adam Shisler, first-year representative; Chad Lindt, senior legislative liaison; Pamela Cotton, junior legislative liaison; Tiffany Tredway-Ransom, newsletter editor; Sepideh Shirali, meetings coordinator; Poonam Vallabhbhai and Eric Braunlin, community service; Patrick Waters, consultant; Precious King, historian; Navid Malik, treasurer; and Evan Cettie, first-year community service organizer.
Scholarships bring smiles to recipients and foundation

Wade, D.D.S., of Bryan came to the Dental Branch recently to present scholarships to two first-year dental students on behalf of the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation.
