Students from The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) volunteered recently at The Fort Bend Family Health Center, a community health center in Stafford. The students performed limited operative procedures and preventive treatment. This volunteer opportunity has been an ongoing community outreach activity for HSDA members.

Adrienne Williams, DDS, a UTSD graduate and dental director of Fort Bend Family Health Center, joined the volunteers, who included fourth-year students Alexandra Aponte, Cynthia Corral and Melissa Uriegas, and third-year dental students Sean LaRue, Aaron Menchaca and Samantha Smith.

Menchaca, who serves as HSDA Community Service Chair, said it was a great experience.

“I assisted an upper-classman in completing two operative procedures, and I learned new methods that I could implement on my future patients to increase my efficiency,” he said. “I believe volunteering in various clinical settings is important for students because each facility has different techniques, instruments, and materials.”
