Two students from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston have been chosen for national leadership positions in the American Student Dental Association (ASDA). Katie Sowa was named editor-in-chief of ASDA publications, and Adrien Lewis was appointed to ASDA’s Council on Membership.
The leadership appointments for 2013-14 were made in January by the association’s Board of Trustees after a competitive application process.
Sowa, a second-year dental student, will lead a five-member editorial board and oversee the association’s quarterly journal, monthly newsletter and blog. As editor-in-chief she will also be a non-voting member of ASDA’s Board of Trustees. She had previously served as electronic editor and was responsible for ASDA’s blog “Mouthing Off,” in addition to contributing to the other publications.
Sowa has long been interested in writing and before dental school she contributed to a local magazine and wrote a blog that earned a “Readers’ Choice” honor for best local blog from the Houston Press.
“I’ve always enjoyed writing and the editorial process,” she said.
As editor-in-chief, Sowa hopes to increase readership and awareness of the association’s publications, and also to include news and contributions from more ASDA chapters across the country.
Lewis, a first-year dental student, will serve as an associate on the Council on Membership, which promotes ASDA’s recruitment and retention efforts by developing member resources, recommending new member benefits and assisting individual chapters.
She first became active in ASDA as an undergraduate predental student and believes the association is a great way to get involved with organized dentistry.
“ASDA has greatly contributed to my predental and dental school experiences, and I’m excited to give back to the organization what it has given me,” Lewis said.
