Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Ray Koeppen, DDS, now chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, leads first-year dental student Greg Chaffin in the military oath of office.

Greg Chaffin, a first-year dental student at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, has been sworn into the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant.  Retired Air Force Col. Raymond Koeppen, DDS, chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, administered the oath earlier this month.

Chaffin, a Cypress native, earned an undergraduate degree in international business from the University of Texas in Austin. After completing dental school, he will serve at least three years as an Air Force dentist.

The opportunities for postgraduate training and career advancement, the focus on patient care and the military’s scholarship covering tuition were among the many factors that attracted him to the Air Force, he said.

Before joining the UTSD faculty, Koeppen held a variety of clinical, teaching and administrative posts in the Air Force Dental Corps. Any active duty or retired officer can administer the oath.
