University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston faculty member Isabel Gay, DDS, MS, received the 2013 Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics Award from the American Academy of Periodontology.

Gay, an assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene, was one of 50 faculty nationwide recognized by the AAP for distinction in periodontal education and for inspiring students.

The Academy seeks educators who “demonstrate a commitment to excellence in providing education in the full scope of clinical periodontics and relays that enthusiasm to students,” according the AAP website.

A recipient is chosen annually at each participating dental school and receives a personalized framed certificate. The 2012 award winner at UTSD was Gina Bonaventura, DDS, MS, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene.

Gay joined the UTSD faculty in 2008. She received an undergraduate degree, DDS and master’s degree in clinical dentistry from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She worked in private practice in Mexico City for several years and also served on the faculty of UNAM.

Later, Gay became an instructor and researcher at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and then a clinical assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she also earned a master’s degree and certificate in periodontology.

She is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, president of the Greater Houston Society of Periodontics and a former officer in the Houston chapter of the American Association for Dental Research.
