Members of the Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity at The University of Texas School of Dentistry spent a recent Saturday volunteering at the nonprofit Houston Food Bank. Alpha Omega volunteers sorted and packed 13,968 pounds of food, allowing for 11,640 meals to be supplied for families in Houston.

A food bank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to hunger relief charities. Food usually comes from various sources in the food industry, like grocery stores and wholesalers, that have thousands of pounds of food to give away -- edible food that might otherwise be wasted.  The Houston Food Bank warehouses the food and, with help from volunteers like those from Alpha Omega, sorts, packs and re-distributes the food to the community.

Alpha Omega President Allison Whitman and Josh Becker were among volunteers Jan. 25 at the Houston Food Bank.
