Col. Shelley to Speak at May 23 Graduation

U.S. Army Col. Johnette J. Shelley, DDS ’81, will be the keynote speaker at the School of Dentistry’s graduation convocation Friday, May 23 at Cullen Performance Hall.

U.S. Army Col. Johnette J. Shelley, DDS ’81, will be  the  keynote speaker at the School of Dentistry’s graduation convocation Friday, May 23 at Cullen Performance Hall.

Col. Johnette J. Shelley, DDS, director of health and wellness for the U.S. Army Dental Command at Fort Sam Houston, will be the keynote speaker for The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s graduation convocation ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23 in Cullen Performance Hall on the University of Houston main campus. 

Shelley and Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, both graduated in the Class of 1981.

She grew up in Dallas and graduated from the University of North Texas in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in biology, enlisting in the Women’s Army Corps that same year. She later enrolled at the School of Dentistry, and upon graduation was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army Dental Corps.

In 1990, Shelley completed a two-year general dentistry residency at Fort Hood and later continued her education, earning master’s degrees in healthcare administration from Baylor University, in dental public health from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, and in Strategic Studies from the Army War College.

She has served at posts throughout Texas and in Maryland, Arizona, North Carolina and Georgia, as well as overseas in Korea, Japan and Kuwait. She’s held multiple command assignments over the past 30 years and also served as dean of graduate dental programs at both Fort Bragg and Fort Gordon.

The Army has awarded Shelley the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal and more than a dozen other medals and awards, including the Expert Field Medical Badge and the Army Parachutist Badge.

She is certified by the American Board of General Dentistry and the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry, and she’s a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry.
