Student members of the Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity at The University of Texas School of Dentistry volunteered at the inaugural American Diabetes Association EXPO® Houston at NRG Center in July.
Under the leadership of Associate Professor June Sadowsky, DDS, MPH, Alpha Omega members provided oral screenings and oral hygiene instructions to more than 100 attendees. Discussions on the systemic link between periodontitis and diabetes encouraged attendees to become proactive about their oral health.
The Houston EXPO® included health screenings, cooking demonstrations and product and service exhibitors, and leading experts talked about diabetes management, research and prevention. Members of various Texas Medical Center institutions were in attendance to provide open panel discussions, as was NBA legend Dominique Wilkins, who has diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association is a network of volunteers, a membership of people with diabetes, their families and caregivers; and a professional society of health care professionals who share the common goal of preventing and curing diabetes and improving the lives of all people affected by the disease.
Alpha Omega is a 100-year-old international dental fraternity based on high ethical standards and Judaic values. Faculty sponsors at UTSD include Sadowsky and Clinical Assistant Professor Paul Levine, DDS.
