Student members of the Pediatric Education Dental Society (P.E.D.S. Club) from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston volunteered at the Back-to-School Teen Health Summit hosted by Worthing High School Aug. 16 in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

Under the leadership of UTSD Pediatric Resident Dr. Derek Steinbring, 17 undergraduate dental students volunteered to provide oral health screenings to more than 40 children and teens, and to deliver oral hygiene instruction and products to more than 150 children, teens, and other family members. The emphasis was on preventing childhood caries through routine brushing, limiting dietary sugar, and getting regular dental check-ups.

The Teen Health Summit was the result of collaboration between UTSD and a group of dedicated high school students at Worthing High School. Participants came from Texas Southern University, Baylor College of Medicine, a local law enforcement agency and fire department, UT School of Public Health, 97.9 The Box radio station, and many more local groups. The event provided health screenings, games, door prizes, and empowerment sessions for the teens.

The P.E.D.S. mission is to encourage and promote the pursuit of excellence in pediatric dentistry, and this student association’s objectives are to raise awareness about the importance of children’s dental care beginning as early as possible, and to work to fulfill this need through service projects.

UTSDS students interested in joining P.E.D.S. should contact President Mary Glasheen at mary.r.hesse@uth.tmc.edu, or the faculty sponsor, Dr. Gary Badger, chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
