80 College Students See UTHealth Dentistry, Medicine

The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program will wrap up this week at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry and Medical School, where 80 rising college juniors or sophomores have spent the last six weeks getting a first-hand look at health care professions.

Sixty pre-medical and 20 pre-dental students — all from minority groups, rural areas or economically disadvantaged backgrounds —are chosen to participate each year, with the goal of encouraging their interest in health professions. This year’s class includes 27 men and 53 women from 22 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. They were selected from 466 applicants.  Read more

 

New Director of Development for School of Dentistry

Elizabeth K. “Beth” Wilson, MS, is the new director of development for The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. She began the job June 23 and will report to Dean John A. Valenza, DDS.

Wilson was most recently employed as vice president of resource development for Bering Omega Community Services, and she has worked in nonprofit health care development for 25 years, with a resume that includes the American Heart Association, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the American Diabetes Association and Cancer Counseling, Inc.

A native of Florida, she grew up in northwest Houston and graduated from Jersey Village High School, where she and Associate Professor Boyd Shepherd, DDS, JD, were classmates. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business marketing and a master’s degree in psychology, both from the University of Phoenix.  Read more

Fourteen faculty members of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston have been chosen as winners of Dean’s Excellence Awards for 2014.

Four were honored individually, including Associate Professor and Director of Simulation Renato M. Silva, DDS, MS, PhD; Department of Endodontics Chair and Professor Sam Dorn, DDS; Professor Donna Warren-Morris, RDH, MEd; and Associate Professor and Advanced Education Director Robin Weltman, DDS, MS.

Ten others received a group award as members of the “Clinical Applications 1 Team” that included Drs. Saroj Bahl, Lincoln Edwards, Deborah Franklin, Art Jeske, Cameron Jeter, Ted Pate, Charles Streckfus, Gena Tribble, Dharini van der Hoeven and Ransome van der Hoeven.

Winners receive a cash award and automatically become members of the Dean’s Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars.  A full listing of the awards, along with information from the nominations follows: Read more

 

Faculty Retreat Focuses on CODA, Wellness, Culture

John N. Williams, DMD, MBA, 2013-14 chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation, was a keynote speaker and continuing education provider for The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s Faculty Retreat at the Denton A. Cooley, MD, and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center June 26-27.  

Other keynote presenters included Charlene Dewey, MD, MEd, co-director of the Center for Professional Health at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; and two speakers from the UTHealth Employee Assistance ProgramSharlene Johnson, MA, LPC-S, LBSW, LCDC and Anjanette Sullivan, MA.

Williams facilitated “CODA Overview: Perspectives on Revised Predoctoral Standards,” a course that invited participants to assess standards for critical thinking, ethics and professionalism, appraisal and communication of the scientific literature, replacement of missing teeth, evidence-based patient care and continuous quality improvement. Read more

 

6th Annual Scream-Out Ice Cream Party Set for July 17

UTSD employees and students are invited to enjoy free ice cream at the Dean's Annual "Scream Out" on July 17.

In observance of July as National Ice Cream Month, the faculty, staff and students of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston are invited to the Sixth Annual “Scream-Out” Ice Cream Party, hosted by Dean John Valenza, DDS.

This year’s event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17 in the Denton A. Cooley, MD, and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center.  Read more
