A newly-minted dentist entering the profession suddenly faces an array of challenges not taught in the classroom or the clinic – such as unfair employment contracts, securing financing for a new practice or finding that first job.
The new Professional Resource Center at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston aims to help current students as well as alumni navigate the sometimes-difficult business and practical aspects of dentistry, and also to provide career counseling and employment assistance.
The center, which opened earlier this year, is headed by two UTSD alumni with broad and diverse experience in the dental profession. Visiting Professor S. Jerry Long, DDS, Class of ’66, practiced dentistry in Houston for 43 years, building a successful practice while earning a reputation as a leader in organized dentistry.
The other is Clinical Associate Professor Boyd W. Shepherd, DDS, JD, of the UTSD Class of 1988. He’s a former dentist who now practices law and is well-versed in the legal and ethical issues dentists may confront. Read more | On Dec. 5, it's Time Capsule II: 2012 Packing Party

It'll be 2062 before you know it. Don't miss your chance to contribute to the UT School of Dentistry's 2012 Time Capsule.
|
Employees, students and any alumni who happen to be here are invited to the ceremonial packing of a 2012 time capsule to be stashed in the new School of Dentistry building and not opened for at least 50 years. The event begins at noon Wednesday, Dec. 5 in the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center. Lunch refreshments will be served, so please RSVP to specialevents@uth.tmc.edu.
Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, will host the event, along with Student Council President Patricia Tan. Participants will have a chance to see the things going into the capsule, learn how they were chosen, see who won awards for the items they suggested, and be part of history by signing an archival scroll and being in a commemorative photo to be taken at the ceremony. The time capsule will be sealed and placed in a wall at the School of Dentistry at a future date. Read more | Houston is home again for new chair of Diagnostic & Biomedical Sciences

Dental students at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston raised more than $1,300 for men’s health causes this week by inviting potential donors to munch on free chili pie while watching Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, and Professor Kenneth Abramovitch, DDS, MS, lose their beards to a professional from Shave Houston.
Bearded Associate Professor Gary Frey, DDS, also entered the shaving lineup, but only after a frenzy of last-minute donations topped $250 on word that he would be shaved if that amount could be raised.
Frey had been wearing a full beard for about 12 years, but on the patio of the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center on Monday, he joined Valenza and Abramovitch in acquiring a new, mustachioed look in observance of “Movember.” Read more | Dr. English honored with Martin E.
