Employees, students and a few alumni of The University of Texas School of Dentistry gathered Wednesday, Dec. 5 for “Time Capsule II:  2012 Packing Party” — the ceremonial packing of the time capsule that will be sealed and stored in a marked location inside the school. The capsule commemorates 2012 as the school’s first year in the Cambridge Street building.

At the event, attendees could sign a 12-foot archival scroll, pose for a group photograph and video, and drop off letters to their future selves or to UTSD personnel of the future. These and dozens of other items will go into the capsule before it’s finally sealed in January. Anyone who didn’t have a chance to sign the scroll may do so in the Library and Learning Commons before the holiday break.

Dean John Valenza, DDS, emceed the “packing party” and advised students to mark their calendars for Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2062 – the target date for opening the capsule – although no one really knows when it will be opened. Items going into the capsule were displayed on tables, with Valenza choosing some of them to show on the big screen.  Read more

UTSD Students Embrace New Color-Coded Scrubs

Perhaps the most visible change this year at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston – besides the new building – is the colorful assortment of scrubs students are now wearing to class and clinic.

All UTSD students traditionally wore the standard misty-green scrubs, but starting this year the school adopted a color-coded scheme to differentiate students by class – a total of six colors for the four dental classes and the two dental hygiene classes.

The change was more about functionality than esthetics, said Robert Cederberg, DDS, associate dean for patient care.

While the clinical area at the old Dental Branch building was more segregated with walled bays, the practice areas in the new building are more wide open, with faculty supervising students from various classes.

In addition, a new clinical model integrates students from different classes into the same practice sessions, and it is important for faculty to know the experience level of the students they oversee, Cederberg said. Read more
