Dr. Streckfus Named Outstanding Mentor of 2013

Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences Professor Charles Streckfus, DDS, MA, was honored as “Outstanding Mentor of the Year” at the Fall Faculty Assembly at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.  He was nominated by Assistant Professor Juliana Barros, DDS, MS, and Assistant Professor Shalizeh Patel, DDS.

The Faculty Development and Evaluation Committee reviews all submissions for the award and sends a recommendation to the dean, who determines the winner. Read more

 

Annual Heart & Stroke Walk Draws UTSD Walkers

Faculty, staff and students of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry – along with their friends and family members – carried on their tradition of participating in the American Heart Association’s 2013 Houston Heart & Stroke Walk Nov. 16 at Reliant Park.  

UT School of Dentistry Drill Team, led by Team Captain Mamie Ellis, recruited 16 walkers and has raised nearly $4,000, with donations still coming in. The Hearty Smile Walkers, sponsored by F&F Fabrication and led by Team Captain Nancy Frias, recruited 44 walkers and has raised $750 so far. Read more

Houston Fill, the electronic magazine of the American Student Dental Association chapter at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, has won the 2013 Lawrence H. Meskin Journalism Award, presented annually by the American Association of Dental Editors. 

“Houston Fill” co-editors Laura Nelson and Macey Cartrite, both second-year dental students, accepted the award at the AADE annual conference in New Orleans Oct. 30. Read more

 

Advocacy Day Promotes Understanding, Action

“Learning to Be an Advocate for Oral Health” was the theme for a seminar jointly hosted by The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) in October at the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center. It was the first such conference hosted by UTSD.

The half-day seminar drew 40 participants, including UTSD faculty and staff, private dentists, corporate executives and board members of professional associations interested in oral health research and issues currently before Congress.  Discussion topics included access to care, diversity, inclusion, health care reform as regards oral health, workplace issues, the cost of a dental education, and more.  Read more
