$840,000 in Free Care at Give Kids a Smile, Mission of Mercy

Final tallies for the combined Texas Mission of Mercy and Give Kids a Smile events at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry in February show that 1,292 patients received free dental care worth an estimated $840,000, thanks to more than 700 volunteers and 35 sponsors. The School of Dentistry and the Greater Houston Dental Society are 10-year partners in hosting Give Kids a Smile — an annual day of free dental care for children from low-income families. Inviting the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation to conduct a Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) at the same time and venue meant that this year, adults could also get free care. Read more

Students and residents of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston presented research posters at the 2014 Student Table Clinic Presentations March 7 at the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center.  Nearly 40 projects were evaluated by judges from the Houston chapter of the American Association for Dental Research and from the School of Dentistry.

First-place winners include dental student Alex Burger, sponsored by Jacqueline Hecht, PhD, and Shea Posey, PhD; dental hygiene students Kellie Frnka, Sheree Hasson and Leticia Villarreal, sponsored by Harold Henson, RDH, MEd; and endodontics resident Mamatha Yadlapati, DDS, sponsored by Ariadne Letra, DDS, PhD and Renato Silva, DDS, PhD.

March of Dimes® March for Babies Needs You

Donations and walkers are needed for the annual March of Dimes® March for Babies, a 5-mile walk set for Sunday, April 27 at the University of Houston, 2400 Calhoun.  Sign-in begins at 8 before the walk begins at 9 a.m.  The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) has teamed up with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Children’s Memorial Hermann for this event.

At the School of Dentistry, Senior Support Specialist Tracy Robinson in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences is a team captain and invites others to sign up for Team UTHealth-School of Dentistry at the March of Dimes website.  Read more

Volunteers from the Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston participated in the WATCH Health Fair at Sugar Land Town Center March 1. An estimated 3,000 people attended the event.

Under the supervision of faculty sponsor June Sadowsky, DDS, MPH, Alpha Omega students performed oral screenings and gave brief oral hygiene instructions for 116 adult and pediatric patients. More than 20 children received fluoride varnish treatment.  Read more
