2014 Graduates Urged to Consider All Options

Nearly 190 future dentists, dental hygienists and dental specialists participated in The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s 109th graduation convocation ceremony May 23 at Cullen Performance Hall in Houston.  

Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, welcomed the keynote speaker, U.S. Army Col. Johnette J. Shelley, DDS, director of health and wellness for the U.S. Army Dental Command at Fort Sam Houston. Like Valenza, she graduated from UTSD in 1981.

Interest rates then were 18 percent, and her student loan debt was always on her mind, she said.  Having dealt first-hand with the pressure to make money, Shelley urged the graduates to live within their means and not let worries about overhead affect professional care. “Present the patient with all the treatment options and let them make informed decisions,” she said. Read more

Students at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston have chosen three faculty members to receive awards for outstanding teaching in 2014. The winners are:

•    The John H. Freeman Award for Faculty Teaching:  Shalizeh “Shelly” Patel, DDS
•    The John P. McGovern Outstanding Teaching Award:  Trevor E. Treasure, DDS, MD

More than 50 awards were presented at The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s DDS Class of 2014 Senior Banquet April 25 in the Denton A. Cooley, MD, and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center.  

Class President Tim Hill opened the program and introduced Dr. Dan Bentley to lead the invocation. Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, and Dr. Philip Pierpont, associate dean for student and alumni affairs, also spoke briefly before presentation of awards got underway.

Eleven students were recognized as new members of the Mu Mu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honorary Society, including Tamir Anver, Kimberly Baskin Borges, Rachel Anne Bishop, Jeremy R. Dental Hygiene Class of 2014 Honors Excellence

Senior students in The University of Texas School of Dentistry’s Dental Hygiene Program gathered for their awards banquet May 17 at Trevisio in the Texas Medical Center of Houston.  

Eleven awards were presented in all, with four students — Lyn Hunter, Leticia Villarreal, Rebecca Lucero and Ann Seelbach —  inducted into Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society.  By vote of the students, Professor Donna Warren-Morris, RDH, MEd, received the 2014 Lorna J. Bruning Award for Outstanding Teaching.
