About Us:

Since its founding in 1905, the UT Dental Branch at Houston has graduated more than 6,000 dentists, 1,850 dental hygienists and nearly 1,500 post-graduate specialists. Currently, the school offers 10 accredited programs: DDS, dental hygiene, two primary care general residency programs and six specialty programs in pediatric dentistry, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, periodontics and orthodontics. The school also offers a DDS/PhD in collaboration with the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

UTDB students gain clinical skills in on-site clinics, at affiliated hospitals and through community outreach projects. The Dental Branch currently has affiliations with Ben Taub General Hospital, Memorial Hermann Hospital, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and other Texas Medical Center (TMC) institutions.

The UTDB faculty includes 84 full-time and 82 part-time professors teaching 301 DDS, 89 post-doctoral and 76 dental hygiene students on campus. The school is a leading research center in salivary diagnostics, oral cancer, tissue regeneration, immunology, biomaterials and other areas, taking full advantage of collaborative opportunities in the TMC and beyond. In August 2007, the university broke ground on the $161 million UT Research Park, which will include a new building for the Dental Branch, the first in more than 50 years.

Mission:
The central mission of The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston is to provide the highest quality education programs that prepare dental and hygiene professionals for the State of Texas, while contributing to the advancement of oral health through discovery and dissemination of new knowledge. The mission is accomplished by

  • attracting and retaining high-quality, culturally diverse faculty, staff, and students
  • developing and presenting comprehensive and contemporary dental education programs
  • generating and disseminating new knowledge through basic, translational and clinical research
  • providing comprehensive, compassionate and ethical oral health care
  • improving the overall health of citizens of Texas and beyond in a professionally enriching and collegial educational enviornment.

The Dental Branch constantly seeks to develop within itself the qualities that are critical in meeting the broad challenges of dental health education. Emphasis is placed upon institutional development in four crucial areas: professional development, institutional planning and assessment, enhancement of private support, and technology management.
