Overview

Completion of the Annual Clinical Updates is required of all Dental Branch faculty, staff, and students (including residents, and preceptors) involved in direct patient care. All clinical personnel must comply the following by October 1, 2008 to maintain clinical activity.

Clinical Updates

Attend each of the three one-hour clinical updates as described below:

  1. Infection Control (1 hour) - Update on Safety & Biohazard Control.

  2. Quality Assurance (1 hour) - Update on Quality Assurance Program and activities at UTDB, including patient care data analyzed by QA Director and Clinical Affairs Committee.

  3. Patient Privacy & HIPAA/Medical Emergencies (1 hour) - Update on HIPAA policies and procedures and Medical Emergency Management protocols for Dental Branch clinics.

Quiz (1 hour)

Successfully complete the quiz on the Clinical Updates (**required for new residents, continuing predoctoral dental and dental hygiene students, and those personnel who satisfy update requirement by online presentations. Faculty, staff, and continuing residents who attend updates are exempt from quiz). The quiz will test on information provided in the updates on Infection Control, Quality Assurance, and Patient Privacy & HIPAA/Medical Emergencies.

Basic Life Support (CPR)

Required every year for all predoctoral dental and dental hygiene students and clinical staff, and every two (2) years for faculty, residents, fellows, and preceptors. Personnel who receive CPR training elsewhere (i.e. part-time faculty) need only submit a valid copy of current certification. See also section on "Requirements" for additional information.

Clinical Updates are scheduled for June 23 and August 20. Faculty, staff and returning residents may "pick and choose" which sessions they attend, so long as all requirements are satisfied (predoctoral dental & dental hygiene students and incoming residents/preceptors will be scheduled into Updates in advance). Attendance is otherwise "open" and pre-registration is only required for Basic Life Support/CPR. For CPR, contact the Office of Patient Care, ext. 4111, to register.
