Catherine Flaitz Named Dean of UT Dental Branch at Houston

Following a national search, Catherine Flaitz, D.D.S., has been named dean of The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston after serving as interim dean of the school since September 2002. “I am honored to have been chosen as the dean of the Dental Branch, especially as we prepare to celebrate our centennial in 2005,” said Flaitz.

“This is an exciting time for the school, as we look forward to beginning our second century of providing excellent education and clinical care and further developing our research and discovery enterprise. There is an optimistic and collaborative spirit within the school and the community that is generating a positive momentum for growth. The timing is perfect for the Dental Branch to partner with the components of the Texas Medical Center to explore the ways that molecular medicine can improve oral health.”

Julia Javarone, thas been elected president of the National Student Research Group

Julia Javarone, the first D.D.S./Ph.D. trainee at the UT Health Science Center has been elected president of the National Student Research Group, which operates under the umbrella of the American Association of Dental Research.

The research group attracts traditional dental students, predoctoral and post-doctoral fellows, as well as D.D.S./Ph.D. trainees across the U.S. engaged in dental, oral and craniofacial research. The organization facilitates communication and career development among trainees nationwide and offers many forums for scientific exchange at local and national meetings. Dental Branch Student Elected President of National Student Research Group “Julie is supported by UT-TORCH, a training grant awarded to the UT Health Science Center in 2003. Her leadership skills and commitment towards excellence bode well for her success in this office,” says her mentor Rena D’Souza, D.D.S., Ph.D., professor and director of Research in the Department of Orthodontics at the Dental Branch. “Needless to say, the Dental Branch and the UT Health Science Center will be recognized nationally as the hub for student research. Since we have a bustling summer program with 25-plus pre-dental and dental student trainees, Julie’s new position will engage and inspire many of her peers as well.” Story provided by The Leader
