Flaitz to receive
2004 President’s Scholar Award for Excellence in Teaching

Catherine M. Flaitz, DDS, MS, dean of the UT Dental
Branch, will receive the 2004 President’s Scholar Award for
Excellence in Teaching. The University of Texas Health Science Center
President James T. Willerson, M.D., announced the honor Wednesday,
Aug. 18, during a President’s Forum where Flaitz was seated
among her colleagues, students and staff.

Willerson said
Flaitz’s nominators described her as an “enthusiastic,
innovative educator with clear communication skills and a solid research
background.” Flaitz will be honored during the 2004 Faculty
Honors Convocation Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Edwin Hornberger Conference
Center. A university-wide announcement of Flaitz’s selection
will be made in the days ahead.
During the talk, which Willerson delivers to each
health science center school annually, he also discussed the university’s
intentions to approach the legislature in January about funds for
a new building for the Dental Branch. |
Telemundo
Health Fair
The
Dental Branch van made another great showing Saturday, Aug. 14 at
the Telemundo Health Fair in southwest Houston. People
involved in the event said: “I came to see what kind of care
my children need. I think this is a good service.” Aracelli
Valencia of Channelview, who brought her three children.

Students receive prosthodontics
awards
Prosthodontics
faculty of the Dental Branch has established student awards for
outstanding performance in the Prosthodontics preclinical and clinical
courses. The recipients of these awards are: Freshman Occlusion
Award: Charles Spurlock; Outstanding Award
for Sophomore Preclinical Prosthodontics: Ashley Farrar;
Outstanding Award for Junior Clinical Achievements:
Neda Obredovic-Dodig, Ai Mitome, Thai
Vuu and Natalya Bejar. Five additional
sophomores were awarded certificates of excellence. They are Ryan
Leonhart, Troy Gor, Angela Incrapera,
John McGrory, and Ginger Rome.
