The Department of Endodontics and Periodontics receives $1,485,000 from NIDCR over a period of four years.
On July 1, 2004, this NIH R01 grant was awarded to Dr. Chunlin Qin, DDS, MS, PhD, Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Endodontics and Periodontics of the Dental Branch and to Dr. William T. Butler, PhD, Professor Emeritus in the same department.

Dr. Qin is the principal investigator on an R01 awarded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research titled "Studies of Proteins Involved in Dentinogenesis." Dr. Butler is a co-investigator. This work is based on the hypothesis that extracellular matrix proteins which are not like collagen (the major protein of connective tissues, cartilage, and bone) play vital roles in the formation of dentin (the ivory substance that forms the mass of a tooth) by odontoblasts (dentin-forming cells) and also play a role in boneosteoclasts (cells that break down bone). The two major proteins to be studied are dentin matrix protein protein 1 (DMP-1) and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP). The proposal focuses on the biochemistry of these proteins and how they are processed into active forms in the cell.

Dental Branch students welcomed to the UT family
Students new to the Dental Branch celebrated their arrival in a big way Thursday night, during 2004 Salutation. The new student welcome event offered an opportunity to mingle with peers and meet the deans from schools across The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

The evening, sponsored by the Student InterCouncil and the university’s six deans, received favorable reactions: “I think this is a wonderful way to meet new people,” said Russell McFarlane, a first-year Dental Branch student. “We had a test today and one tomorrow and a lot of people are (stressed) about that. So this is a good way to relax and interact with your peers in a casual setting.”

Following a short program students were able to have “dessert with the dean” of their school or another school of their interest.
