Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences

The primary purpose of the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences is the education of competent oral healthcare professionals for Texas. In pursuit of excellence, the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences focuses its major energy on teaching and patient care in the areas of oral examination and diagnosis, oral medicine, oral pathology, oral radiology and treatment planning, and on the discovery of new information through clinical, translational and basic science research for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases.

The Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences is unique among UT School of Dentistry departments in the variety of its specialists and generalists, clinicians and basic scientists, patient care services and research endeavors. It is more eclectic than any other department and yet it provides, to a large extent, the very foundation upon which much of the rest of the dental school rests. Without appropriate assessment and treatment planning, for example, the undergraduate dental experience would be considerably more frustrating and ineffective, and without the diagnostic teaching and experience provided by the department our graduates would lack the most basic understanding of the great majority of diseases affecting the oral cavity. Also, without the basic research provided by the department, new and innovative understandings of normal and abnormal biology and diseases would not be added to the literature.
