Dr. Katancik became Chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas School of Dentistry on November, 2005, where he lectures and teaches dental and specialty students. Dr. Katancik also lectures locally and nationally on periodontal medicine, implantology, and the treatment of periodontal disease. He also holds the Raul G. Caffesse Distinguished Professorship in Periodontics. He is an active member of American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, Texas Dental Association, Greater Houston Dental Society, Greater Houston Society of Periodontics, Southwest Society of Periodontists, International Association of Dental Research, The American Association of Dental Research and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Katancik formerly served as a faculty member at The University of Tennessee Department of Periodontology from 1998 - 2005 and as program director of the Postgraduate Periodontics program from 2003 - 2005. Dr. Katancik's research focuses primarily on diabetes and systemic diseases and how they relate to periodontal disease.

Dr. Katancik has 25 years of clinical and research experience built upon graduate and post-graduate education in general dentistry and Periodontics. Dr. Katancik obtained his dental degree from Emory University in Atlanta in 1984. Following completion of a general practice residency at the Harvard Medical Center, he practiced general dentistry in Cherry Hill, New Jersey for six years. Dr. Katancik then enrolled in a combined Periodontics/Oral Biology program at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dentistry graduating with a specialty certificate in Periodontics and a Ph.D. in Oral Biology in 1998.
