Dr. Edwards recently joined the faculty as an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Edwards earned both his degrees from Loma Linda University in Southern California, and completed his Postdoctoral training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He will be involved in teaching, clinical practice and research at UT School of Dentistry . His lab will be located at the Craniofacial Research Center. The research in his lab will focus on studying imidazoline compounds as novel treatment for metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Dr. Edwards will investigate the mechanism by which moxonidine, and a novel compound S43126, regulates blood pressure and insulin secretion. His lab uses Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats as a model to understand the mechanism by which S43126 simultaneously decreases both blood pressure, and blood glucose levels in these animals following treatment. The implication is that imidazoline compounds could be developed as possible single agent therapy for diabetics with hypertension. His lab will also use cell lines such as PC12 and A7R5 to understand the cross-talk between insulin and imidazoline receptor signaling pathways. Another research area that his lab will focus on is the possible role of a novel Parotid Hormone in regulating calcium homeostasis and fluid flow in odontoblasts, and insulin release from beta cells.
