Sercan Akyalcin, DDS, PhD, was appointed as full-time Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston on January 5, 2011. He was an assistant professor in the Division of Orthodontics at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry in Canada before this appointment. Dr. Akyalcin has man clinical-based research interests including digital diagnosis and treatment planning, facial and smile esthetics, orthodontic treatment mechanics and materials science. He is currently envisioning establishing a clinically integrated basic science research program within the Orthodontics department.
Dr. Akyalcin earned his dentistry degree from the Aegean University in Izmir, Turkey where he also attained his orthodontic training with a terminal PhD degree. Upon the completion of his residency in 2008, he moved to Canada and became a full-time faculty member at the University of Manitoba. During his first years of teaching in Canada, he received The American Association of Orthodontists Full-time Faculty and Excellence in Classroom Teaching Award. He actively continues to strive for excellence in clinical training and research supervision of graduate orthodontic residents.
