Student Laptop Requirements

All students entering the University of Texas School of Dentistry are required to have a laptop that meets or exceeds the following specifications.

 

a. Laptop computer (PC or Mac) with at least a 13-inch screen with minimum of 1024 x 768 resolution

b. Minimum of 4GB RAM

c. Minimum of 120GB HDD space (larger would be better)

d. Minimum of 1.6GHz processor (Core i5 or better)

e. 256mb video card

f. Must run either Windows 7 Home Premium or Mac OS Lion (10.7.5) or higher

g. Wi-Fi enabled

h. Microsoft Office 2010 or later (This can be purchased from the School Bookstore at educational pricing if needed)

i. High speed internet for off campus access

j. An up-to-date virus scanner must be installed and active

 

In order to use your laptop at the School, the hard drive in your machine must be encrypted.

Mac users must turn on FileVault 2. PC users must purchase and install encryption software.

All students will be required to sign a statement declaring that they will keep their computer hard drives encrypted for as long as they are students of the UT School of Dentistry.

Your laptop will be reviewed as part of Orientation and at periodic times during the program to ensure that it complies with these specifications.

Mac Users

 

Mac users will be required to activate the FileVault 2 encryption software on their machines. Please review the instructions for activating FileVault II on the Apple website and ensure that you have backed up you computer before proceeding with the encryption.

 

PC Users

 

PC Users will be required to purchase software to allow them to encrypt their machines. The School is currently working to determine which encryption software is appropriate and negotiating a deal to secure educational pricing for students to purchase the software.
