2009 - 2010 Student Evaluation & Promotion Committee

Purpose as stated in the UTDB Bylaws

The purpose of this committee, which shall be charged by the Senate and reports to the Dean, shall be to evaluate dental students’ academic performance and their suitability to receive professional degrees or diplomas, to recommend to the Dean their academic status including promotion, probation, or dismissal. The actions of the Committee shall be in accordance with guidelines approved by the Senate.

Committee Charge

• Each Subcommittee will evaluate student progress according to standards established by the Faculty and make recommendations directly to the Dean concerning the academic status of each student and any necessary academic action.  The Evaluation and Promotion Subcommittees will be responsible for making recommendations concerning remedial or corrective action for students with deficiencies.  Each Subcommittee will also make recommendations concerning disciplinary action.
• Ensure communication and coordination among the Evaluation and Promotion Subcommittees.
• Review and endorse student nominees for awards submitted by the Office of Student Affairs.
• Review Student Evaluation and Promotion Committee procedures annually and make recommendations to the Senate.
• Review academic standards and make recommendations to the Senate
• Consider student appeals in accordance with Senate approved guidelines.
• Develop student disciplinary policies, rules and practices in accordance with the Board of Regents Rules.

Committee Structure

• The Committee will consist of four subcommittees with members appointed by the Dean in accordance with the Bylaws.  These subcommittees are 1st Year Dental, 2nd Year Dental, a combined 3rd and 4th Year Dental, and Dental Hygiene.
• The Committee will elect a Committee Chair and Vice-chair from among the Subcommittee chairs.
• Members of each Subcommittee will elect a Chair and Vice-chair.
• The Ex Officio members of the Student Evaluation & Promotion Committee are the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs.
• The Ex Officio members for the First Year Subcommittee are the Associate Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and Director of Academic Affairs.
• The Ex Officio members of the Second Year Subcommittee are the Director of Predoctoral Clinical Education, Director of Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
• The Ex Officio members of the Third and Fourth Year Subcommittee are the Director of Predoctoral Clinical Education, Director of Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Practice Leaders.
• The Ex Officio members of the Dental Hygiene Subcommittee are the Director of the School of Dental Hygiene, Director of Predoctoral Clinical Education, Director of Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs, and  Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
• There are no Student Members on the Student Evaluation & Promotion Committee or its subcommittees.
