General Practice Residency Program
Second-Year Program

The GPR program also conducts an optional second-year program. The second-year program is unique from the first-year, and includes advanced instruction in conscious sedation, medical management, and implantology. In addition, the individual resident can identify major areas of interest, such as specific clinical disciplines, teaching, or research.

Clinical Activity - The second-year resident can expect to spend approximately 40-60% of his/her time treating patients in the Dental Center. This would include performing more complex procedures than encountered in the first year.

Parenteral Sedation - Completion of the second-year curriculum would include increased training to competency in IV sedation, and the resident would be eligible for certification by the State of Texas for conscious sedation.

Teaching Opportunities - The second-year resident would spend a minimum of 1/2 day each week in clinical teaching with 4th-year dental students at the Dental Branch. Additional teaching opportunities can be scheduled and/or created for those residents interested in a future academic career.

Rotations - While no formal rotations are scheduled for the second-year resident, opportunities are virtually endless and specific rotations can be selected by the resident. Example rotational opportunities include (but are not limited to):

Anesthesiology
Dental Oncology (MD Anderson)
Disabled Patients (TIRR)
Emergency Medicine
Esthetic Dentistry
Geriatric Medicine
HIV (Bering Clinic Pathology Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery)
Implant Dentistry
Internal Medicine
Pediatric Dentistry
Research
Other Dental Specialty Programs (Dental Branch)

On-Going Responsibilities - The second-year resident functions as a "chief" resident, and assists the attending staff in teaching and supervising the first-year residents. This includes (but is not limited to) making out the monthly call schedule, treating patients with first-year residents in the operating room, and serving as second call for consultations and emergencies.

Continuing Education - The second-year resident will be given expanded opportunities to attend continuing dental education courses. This will include a larger allowance for such activities and a more flexible schedule to create time for attending courses.

Didactic & Research Activities - The second-year resident will continue to participate in the GPR seminar series, but, in consultation with the Program Director, select which seminars to attend. The second-year resident will also from time-to-time provide seminars to first-year residents. The amount of research activity performed by the second-year resident will depend on his or her individual interests. Scheduling will be structured to accommodate such activity. For example, the resident may choose to increase research time and decrease clinical time.

"Outside Opportunities" - The second-year resident would be eligible to practice in the private sector on a limited basis with agreement of the program director. This would be outside of the regularly scheduled hours of the program (i.e. evenings & Saturdays). The second-year resident would also be encouraged to visit the offices of other practitioners in the area.
