Messenger Express Tutorial

PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW CAREFULLY.

This screen will automatically display the Dental Branch Web Mail tutorial instructions. Resizing and repositioning (side by side) of the tutorial screen and the web browser window will be necessary.

First, open Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator AGAIN to get a second browser window. Then go to Netscape Messenger Express at http://mail.uth.tmc.edu (TYPE THIS URL IN THE LOCATION BOX IN THE BROWSER).

Now resize both windows side by side so that you can read both comfortably. Alternatively, this tutorial is available as a print handout, which may be easier to use.

The next screen that appears is the NetScape Messenger Express login. The first field is for the username and the second field is where a password must be entered to login to the system. Later in this section, you will be asked to create multiple messages so you will have them to complete all of the steps in the tutorial.

1. Type in your username and password.
2. Once username and password have been supplied, the Login icon may be used, or simply hit the Enter key. The login process to web-based mail will now begin.

The next screen that will be displayed is the Netscape Messenger Express for YourNameHere. The messages contained in the default INBOX will be displayed. Several function buttons and icons are displayed at the top of the screen.

3. Click on the Compose icon to display a blank composition screen. Notice the blank fields:

Add Recipient: (required) - Only valid email addresses can be entered here. Recipients can be:

To: the primary person to whom the email is addressed.
Cc:  (Carbon Copy: this field is optional) - Email addresses may be placed here for additional people who should receive a copy of the message.
Bcc: (Blind Carbon Copy: also an optional field) - Email recipients placed in this field receive a copy of the message without knowledge of the other recipients in above fields.

Subject: it is strongly recommended that a subject always be included. This helps readers organize their email.

4. The open box below the subject line is designed to hold the text of the message. Type a message here to send to yourself.

5. Click the Send icon. The system will mail the message and return to the Netscape Messenger Express for YourNameHere page. A copy will be placed in the Sent Folder.

* Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 three more times so that enough messages will be available in the INBOX to complete this tutorial (unless you already have a lot of mail in your inbox.

The Get Mail icon will retrieve new email messages from the web mail server. Notice that each message subject is a hyperlink. Click on this hyperlink to view each message in the Inbox.

The Search icon looks for messages in any folders based on several parameters. The system allows searching by Sender, Subject, Body, or Recipient.

6. Click on the Search icon. The system will display the search screen.

7. Select Sender from the pulldown menu. Type your name in the search field to the right, choose Contains, and then click on the Search button. Notice the system will return all message(s) that match the specified criteria as a Search Result.

The Delete icon removes messages from the Inbox and places them in the Trash Folder. Notice the check boxes to the left of each message subject. These are used to select messages that need to be deleted or moved to a Folder.

8. Check a message in the box and then click the Delete icon. The screen will refresh and the deleted message will be in the Trash Folder. Remember to empty the Trash Folder on a regular basis. The trashed messages take up space in your account.

Mailbox Folders

The web mail system has a default configuration of INBOX, DRAFTS, SENT, and TRASH. It is possible to create additional mail folders to move and store email messages for future retrieval and reference. This feature is available in any of the folders.
